Laptop Care: How to Protect Your Laptop When Traveling

Jonathan Chase

Most business people who travel these days have a laptop in tow. Since the workflow doesn't stop when the need to travel arises, these are necessities that connect them to the rest of the world and allow them to take care of whatever business comes up during the time that they're away. That being the case, there are certain guidelines that should be followed in order to ensure the safety and protection of your laptop when you get called away from the office.

One of the first considerations that should be made is in regard to the laptop's security. Since thieves will target these as often as they will cash, jewelry or other valuables, it's critical to put as many security measures into place as possible when traveling through airports, bus terminals, train stations and any other form of public travel. Of course, it's never wise to leave your laptop unattended. It's a sad testament to the way of the world, but you can be fairly certain that when you return, your equipment will be gone.

When packing for your trip, place the laptop in a case that's different - and less obvious - from its standard carrying case, and make sure that it's checked in as carry-on luggage. This will not only ensure that it doesn't get stolen, but will be in the pressurized part of the plane, rather than the baggage compartment, which doesn't have pressure or climate controls that are needed to ensure the integrity of the laptop.

If you're planning to take a nap while you're en route via public transportation, be sure to secure the laptop before going to sleep. Some people go so far as to cuff the unit to their wrist, but there are other measures that you can take, which include placing it in its case and putting it between your feet or between yourself and the wall if you're sitting by a window. In the event that anything should actually happen to violate the integrity of the laptop - or if it should be stolen, despite your precautions - it's to be expected that you'll have backed up all critical information onto disks before beginning your travels.

When you arrive at the hotel, speak with the front desk clerk to be sure that their phone jacks are compatible with your unit. If they happen to use a digital phone system which differs in voltage from that of a standard phone jack, your modem will most likely be damaged when you try to plug it in and dial-up to get an outside connection. The best approach is to call ahead and check on these accommodations before making the trip, so that you'll know what to expect and not be left with any nasty surprises.

In addition to the laptop itself, it's always a good idea to bring an extension cord and extra batteries. Even though you may plan to use electricity, you should also include a back-up plan, and batteries may only give you a few hours' worth of power at a time before needing to be recharged or changed. When possible, cut down on the use of those things which need large amounts of energy, such as CD-ROMs, and reduce the number of auto-saves on your machine.

By using your common sense and taking simple precautions, as well as including some back-up cords and batteries, you should be able to travel safely and simply with your laptop without a lot of hoopla.

Jewelry and the Darkside: Fashionable Gothic Jewelry
Sam Serio

No, by jewelry and the darkside, we are not referring to Darth Vader's dark side of the force. However, the idea of jewelry inspired by Anakin Skywalker, the Sith and his Emperor sure is tantalizing. Here, if you think more about the likes of Morticia Addams of the Addams family, then you're on the right track. Gothic jewelry is the type of jewelry that the likes of her would wear: mysterious, brooding, yet elegant. Viewed this way, jewelry and the darkside certainly can go hand in hand.

Gothic jewelry, or darkside jewelry, as opposed to 'light,' evokes images of the macabre and the preternatural: vampires, the dead and undead, spirits, black magic and the black arts. As such, artisans craft items that would appeal to a person's dark or gothic side. There is an abundance of e-commerce websites and specialty stores whose emphasis is on jewelry and the darkside. In these places, a person will be able to find gothic jewelry such as pentacle pendants, gothic cross necklaces, spider-and-web piercings, and more.

Also known as pagan jewelry, gothic body ornaments are made from many types of materials, but they are typically available in gold, sterling silver and pewter. They may come plain or be encrusted with jewels. Many pieces of gothic jewelry have their roots in esoteric sources, such as signs and symbols used in ancient Egyptian lore or those employed in Celtic rituals. Other pieces of gothic jewelry are timeless icons representing the eerie: coffin-shaped rings, heavily ornate cross brooches, earrings shaped like the heads of howling wolves.

Slave bracelets, also known as handflowers or maille bracelets, are also popular examples of gothic jewelry. These look like chain mail, or pieces of woven metal. They are different from conventional bracelets in that they are worn not just on the wrist, but on practically the whole hand, and their intricate patterns are sure to attract attention. Bib and choker necklaces are also popular gothic accessories. Catalogues of gothic jewelry oftentimes include so-called 'poison' rings or bracelets. These items have a small compartment where the wearer can presumably keep very small or fine materials, such as powder. Maille, chandelier or dangling earrings are also available to complete one's overall look of mystery.

Gothic jewelry is easy to wear and can be used to dress up or dress down. They are easily available and the variety offered is endless. Because they depict arcane symbols and figures, gothic jewelry imparts a sense of mystery and secrecy. Popular among both the young and not-so-young, gothic jewelry may be dark, but not dreary; ornate, but not tawdry. In fact, it is just the opposite: jewelry and the darkside - a hauntingly beautiful combination.

How to Profit from Creative Home Businesses
Randy Wilson

Ideas for creative home businesses are everywhere. Many of them are already in your head, and you just don't know it. Here are some questions to get your own creative business ideas flowing:

  • What hobbies do I enjoy?
  • What do I already know how to do?
  • Do I want to pursue this full-time or part-time?
  • Am I good with my hands?
  • Do I want to learn a new craft?
  • What do I love?

When it comes to creative home businesses, the last question may be the most important one of all. What do you love to do most? Write? Paint? Embroider? Sew? Build things? Decorate? This is where your passion is, and what you're passionate about, you're most likely to be successful at doing.

Too many people spend their days at jobs they don't even like, much less love. If you're considering starting a creative home business, this is your chance to do what you truly enjoy.

One idea for a creative home business is a home sewing business. Handmade wedding gowns and bridesmaids' dresses are always in demand. There are also opportunities for machine embroidering everything from sports teams' jerseys, caps, and jackets to beautiful beach towels.

Handmade draperies are also hot items these days. So if you're great at sewing or machine embroidery, this is a great area for your creative home business.

Maybe you like to build things. Handcrafted birdhouses, doghouses, toys, as well as many other things, are always in demand. Many times you can sell these items right from your front yard. Or you can sell them in online auctions. If you have a special niche item that you love to build, you may even want to have a kiosk at your local mall to sell your goods.

Jewelry making is one of the hottest trends going. This makes selling your handcrafted jewelry easier than ever. Specialty stores and upscale boutiques will buy all you can make, and at a premium price. You can also sell the handmade jewelry from your creative business on your own website. The cost of websites has come down drastically in the last few years, and they are great for selling to a much larger group of people than you could otherwise.

If you love to paint, get your paintings to a local art gallery that focuses on local artists. Your creative home business can get a turbo charge this way. Good art galleries are always on the lookout for fresh, new talent and are willing to have shows where you can sell your paintings. Another idea for selling your paintings (that not a lot of artists think of!) is through interior decorators. They, too, are always looking for unique art for their clients' homes and apartments. So arrange to show some of them your work and you'll likely make several sales immediately.

Now that you hopefully have your own creative business idea, here are a few things you need to consider:

  • What supplies and/or equipment do I need?
  • Should I hire an accountant?
  • Do I have the space I need in my home?
  • Does my area/state require me to get a business license?
  • How do I prepare for tax time?
  • Is there a market for my items?
  • What's my competition doing?
  • How do I advertise?

After you've done the needed research, write out a business plan. And then follow it. You can't make a wedding gown without a pattern or plan. You can't build a business without one either. But with a good business plan, effort, determination, and patience, you CAN have the successful creative home business you've always dreamed of having.

Shopping Cart Abandonment Solved!

Mike Banks Valentine

Imagine yourself at the local Sears carrying a shopping basket
down the isles looking for the perfect gift for your spouse
when you come to a great looking watch in the jewelry department.
You know she'll love the design, but also know she has a curious
allergy to white gold and call over a salesperson to ask them
what the bevel surround is made of. She reassures you that it's
made of platinum so you cheerfully purchase the watch, smiling
as you wander over to have it gift-wrapped.

Take the same scenario online and imagine you have the same
simple question to ask someone. Now what? You most likely just
abandon the shopping cart and leave the store because you can't
imagine spending that amount of money without knowing whether
your sweetie will break out in hives because the white gold
allergy affects her wrists so badly.

Abandonment of shopping carts online is blamed on everything
from fear of using credit cards on the web to privacy concerns.

My theory is as follows: If you have any questions about any
product or service you are purchasing online, ecommerce sites
expect you to either look up the answer in their FAQ's
(frequently asked questions page) or just search out their
800 number from the site somewhere and call them yourself to
find out. This can be a ridiculous process on some sites as
they simply don't want to be bothered with expensive phone
calls and leave their number off of the shopping cart pages.

They don't want to devote customer service reps to those fickle
shoppers that abandon online shopping carts at rates as high
as 90% at some ecommerce sites. I'd propose that most online
shoppers abandon those carts because they need to know something
that could never be considered for those FAQ pages like the term
of the product guarantees or how long the battery life is. If
there were a simple way to have your questions answered, I'd
like to suggest that those shopping carts would rarely ever
be abandoned.

I've found the solution and can't believe the brilliance of
the idea behind the answer to this thorny question. Customer
clicks a button labled "CallButton" and gets a pop-up screen
asking for their name and phone number so a representative
can call them at their convenience to answer any questions
and/or concerns!

They fill int their name and phone number and receive a polite
response page custom designed to reassure them that they will
be contacted how and when they would like to be by a person that
can actually answer their question! No nasty telephone trees or
automated callbacks, but a person from the jewelry department
that knows platinum from white gold.

You now have the name and phone number of a prime valuable
customer ready to buy who WANTS to hear from you.

>From the customers viewpoint, this is simple, responsive and
satisfying. From the sellers position it is one of the most
powerful ecommerce tools to be announced on the web this year!
This idea and the powerful software behind that simple button
were announced at a press event titled "Showstoppers" during
the Spring 2001 InternetWorld conference and show in the City
of Angels (Los Angeles) March 15th.

This tool receives my vote as a better ecommerce solution than
any seen at the huge eCRM (Customer Relationship Management) show
held concurrently with the I-World show at the LA convention
center this month. The powerful tracking and reporting functions
that come as part of the package with this incredibly simple
little button could turn around the fortunes of major e-tailers
like many of those we've seen sink in the economic downturn.

Priced at a very low per-call rate starting at about $1.50
per customer contact, you can have calls routed anywhere from
your cell phone to your home office and be assured of making
the sale to that customer that very likely would have walked
(or clicked) right out of your e-store without that personal
contact from a caring customer representative. Most so-called
CRM solutions are simply automated-database-tracking-purchase-
recording-preference-listing-sub-routine-predictive-expensive-
file-them-here-contact-them-then-follow-up-with-them-next
types of robotic de-personalizers.

CallButton offers the reporting and tracking tools available
in those complex CRM solutions with two major differences. Your
customer gets their questions answered and you make the sale!
It's installed on your page with a short line of HTML code and
you don't invest the tens of thousands of dollars required of
major corporations for their robotic de-personalizer software.

You make the sale, your customer is satisfied. Now comes the
bonus. The upsell while the customer is on the phone with you.
This prospect has requested your contact, has an interest in more
of what you sell and has qualified themselves for your services.
If you don't upsell them now, you might consider doing something
else with your time.

I've signed up for the service and can't imagine how I got along
without it. It's priced for the small business and handily solves a
difficult issue for both business owners and their customers.

The Financial Power of Gay Weddings - Q & A
Marianne Puechl

Q. Why should people consider gay unions financially profitable?

A. Gay weddings may not be legal just yet, but commitment ceremonies occur regularly throughout the United States. According to statistics from Girlfriends magazine 31% of couples do intend to settle down into a committed relationship. Lesbians and gays who choose to formalize their relationship spend an average of $15,000 on a wedding.

Q. What sorts of goods and services will gay couples purchase for their weddings?

A. Gay and lesbian partners who register with Rainbow Wedding Network, the first wedding gift registry specifically for the gay and lesbian community, purchase the same goods and services as heterosexual couples. Overall their commitment ceremonies very closely resemble heterosexual weddings and include, for example: invitations, jewelry (often custom), florists, wedding coordinators and planners, photographers, limousine services, reception halls, and wedding cakes. When it comes to entertainment, couples may opt for musicians, disc jockeys or something a little more unique; yet it is true that gay and lesbian couples want all of the same amenities and services. They spend a comparable amount of money to straight people and, like any proud couple, want their union to be a remembered 'event.'

Q. What attracts gay couples to a business when they look for goods and services for their weddings?

A. Most gay and lesbian couples want to work with businesses that will truly participate with them in the joy of the moment respectfully. This includes the process as well as the ceremony; for instance assisting with picking out just the right engagement ring with the professionalism and enthusiasm that such an occasion warrants. Gays and lesbians often look for businesses advertised in gay publications or that openly support the gay community. If a business owner wishes to work in gay weddings, it is important to establish an advertising presence in local gay publications, to participate in gay-oriented events or to provide services at charities affiliated with the gay community. At the very least, displaying a rainbow flag on a website, marketing materials, or the actual place of business is an easy indication of a gay-friendly attitude and mentality.

Q. Are there other special needs or concerns for gay and lesbians who are being married?

A. Gay couples look for a comfort zone when utilizing the services of a vendor. They also may want to employ some creativity in their approach. For example, a lesbian woman may want to purchase a wedding gown or she may prefer a tuxedo. At RainbowWeddingNetwork, advertisers are screened, and conversed with personally before signing on. Advertising contracts stipulate that discrimination based on sexual orientation will not be tolerated. If a representative of a company does discriminate against a gay couple, the Network immediately has the right to discontinue advertising.

Q. How lucrative is the gay honeymooning market?

A. Many people in the gay community like to pamper themselves, show off, and enjoy life. The spending trend which began with the ceremony continues with the honeymoon. Travel statistics show the American gay and lesbian community represents $47.3 million, or about 10% of the travel industry. Eighty-nine percent hold a valid passport, and 54% budget $3,000 + on a vacation. Not only does the community travel, it travels well and purchases a variety of services while vacationing, to broaden their holiday experience.

Q. What considerations do gay honeymooners have when they select travel services and destinations?

A. Often gay and lesbian honeymooners will do business with a travel agent or travel services that work with openly gay couples, simply to insure that they can travel comfortably; not only enjoy themselves but moreover feel recognized as a couple having the full honeymoon experience.

Q. Is there other special advice to businesses that want to work with gay and lesbian couples?

A. It is most important to remember that gay weddings are not much different from heterosexual unions. These are two people in love who want to pay for respectful service. Treat gay unions as any other, and make certain there is good communication. Dialogue with your gay clients, as you would with any others. This leads to common ground, and the ability to provide the most ideal services for the particular couple with whom you are doing business!

Marianne Puechl is co-owner of www.RainbowWeddingNetwork.com, the first exclusive gay and lesbian wedding registry on-line. The site includes a directory of over 4,000 screened, gay-friendly businesses nationwide and in Canada. RWN was launched in 2000, and the first GLBT Wedding Expo will occur in Boston, Massachusetts on May 2, 2004.

7 Quick Tips to Keep You Organized

Barbara Myers

1. Avoid late fees. As soon as you borrow books or rent videos, write down the due dates and quantity
borrowed/rented on your calendar.

2. Tape a list of important phone numbers inside a kitchen cabinet door near the phone.

3. Assign a basket or large envelope for credit card receipts. Hang it on the wall and throw in receipts daily.

4. Plan only 70% of your day to allow for interruptions and emergencies.

5. Write down messages in a spiral notebook as you take them from your answering machine or voice mail.
Avoid replaying them and wasting time. Cross them off as you take care of them.

6. Divide your daily to-do list into four sections. Consider "to do," "to call," "computer tasks" and "errands."

7. Choose and prepare five outfits for each family member on the weekend. Include jewelry, shoes and socks. You'll save time and stress during the week.

WHAT IS RENTER'S INSURANCE & DO I NEED IT?
dan the roommate man

If you are moving into an apartment you may want to consider investing in insurance. Along with the first month's rent, chances are you will be asked to pay a security deposit. This is a type of insurance for your landlord. The landlord can use this deposit to pay for any damages caused during your residency. For you, security comes in the form of renter's insurance.

Most renters use the homeowner's form of insurance known as the HO4 policy. This policy will typically cover furniture, clothing, and most personal property in the event of fire or smoke, lightning, vandalism, theft, explosion, windstorm, or water damage from plumbing. In most cases, the insurance company will take your word for what you think your property is worth. However, if you're wanting to insure your jewelry, art pieces or other collected items, you might need to pay extra for what's called a "Scheduled Personal Property Endorsement." For this type of coverage, the insurance company will send out an appraiser. An appraiser will also be sent out to your property in the event that your insured items have been damaged.

For a little extra, most insurance companies will cover your things on a replacement-cost basis. For example, if your old microwave is only worth fifty dollars, but it would cost one hundred and fifty to replace it, the company will insure that microwave for a hundred and fifty dollars. That way, in the event of an actual disaster, or if your property is damaged and your insurance company is going to cover it, you won't be reimbursed for a ten year old refrigerator or a five year old couch, but for what it will cost to replace them.

The HO4 policy also pays any necessary additional living expenses you are forced to make due to a natural disaster or in case your apartment asks you to move out for a short period of time while they remodel, fumigate, etc. If your apartment building is hit by a tornado, it's going to take more than a couple of days to rebuild your complex. Eating every meal out and living in a motel can add up quickly. By investing in this policy, you won't have to worry about these expenses.

Renter's insurance is typically priced around $200/yr for $30K worth of coverage and $100K worth of liability. However, the cost for renter's insurance may vary depending on several factors. For example, you will pay a lower premium if you're next door to the fire department than if you're two miles away. If you are in a high crime area, your premium will be considerably more than someone living in a picture book neighborhood. In older apartments without up-to-date wiring, the premium will be a bit higher. For complete details, contact your local insurance company.

Wearable Art: The Great Conversation Starter

Nerello Glasure

Ok, you are heading to a small get together or large party and you know that you will not know many of the other guests. Alternatively, maybe you want people (or maybe that cutie!) to have an easy way to approach you. In these situations, wear something that is highly likely to be a good conversation starter. For example, if hats are your thing, choose one that that people will be prompted to ask you about it. Even easier, is to wear a unique and funky jewelry accessory (called wearable art) that will quickly catch people's attention and gives them an easy in to ask you about it.

Bring Your Own Conversation Piece

Wearable art is a fantastic conversation prop, providing a non-threatening way to start a conversation. Actually, you are giving people an excuse to come and talk to you. You make yourself more approachable and interesting because you are wearing ("Come say hi to me!") something about you that is an obvious talking point. These jewelry fashion props are natural conversation starters. They encourage conversation and others will be more naturally compelled to start a conversation with you.

Jewelry Adds to Your Body Language

Jewelry reflects the ultimate style and personality of the person wearing it. Zany and colorful wearable art works best, it shows you have spirit, are playful, light-hearted, and spontaneous. People are naturally attracted to this.

Timely Fashion

Wearing watches just to tell time is outdated and out of fashion. Creative and artistically creative watches are now the hottest, must have accessories. Both sexes are buying watches that are as fashionable as they are functional. Look for watch art with unique colors, design, shapes, or other significant characteristics. They stick out and help you get that conversation started.

Best Bet: Never leave home without your wearable art conversation prop!!!

"10 Easy Ways To Promote Your Website For Cheap Or Free"
© 2004 Jen Merkel

You've built your website and you're quite proud of it. The graphics look nice, it has a few interesting pieces of information and it showcases your subject perfectly. But how do you draw people to it and get that hit counter climbing without breaking the bank? You've got your meta tags in place but you just can't afford to pay the humungous fee to be a featured advertiser on a mega-search engine. Here are a few easy and quick ways to publicize your website which are either cheap or free.

1. Link Exchanges

One of the most effective ways to get traffic moving into your site is to list it as a link on other sites of interest to your target market. If you don't already know of another site similar to yours, just do a Google search using a few appropriate keywords. By using Google to do a search on the words "link exchange" you will also find entire sites - some free, some with a fee - with directories of sites willing to exchange links. Once you find a site, see if they have a links page and scan it to make sure yours would be a good fit. Usually instructions on exchanging links are somewhere on the website, but if they're not simply e-mail the webmaster or site owner and ask if they have a link exchange program. Be sure your site does not compete with theirs. After all, you will have to reciprocate with a link to their site on your own. Corporate sites don't normally do link exchanges, you will have much better luck with a site owned by an individual or small business. If you don't have a banner, you can create one for free online. A very user-friendly site for this is www.addesigner.com, but there are several others out there as well.

2. Join a Web-Ring

Web-Rings are a way of driving traffic to your site from others similar to yours. You simply place a web-ring banner on your home page using specified HTML code and you're automatically part of the network. When a visitor clicks on the web-ring banner at one member's site, they are directed to the next site in the web-ring, potentially yours. There are some things to consider when joining a web-ring. For example, when one of your site's viewers clicks on your web-ring banner, they are being directed off your site onto someone else's. If you join a web-ring, find one matching the interests of your target market that doesn't have a large number of members competing with you. For example, if your site sells aquariums, join a site for tropical fish enthusiasts rather than one with for people who sell pet products.

3. Host a Contest

Everyone loves to win a contest, and if yours offers something of value to your target market you can spark a lot of interest. The prize doesn't have to be big - maybe a $10.00 gift certificate, a set of books, a pretty piece of jewelry you purchased on closeout, or of course one of your products. You may be able to get prize donations from your link partners or others in your network simply by offering them credit and a link on your site throughout the contest. It's also smart to offer extra entries to a contestant if they refer someone else - word of mouth (or e-mail) is extremely powerful!

4. Win an Award

This may take some legwork on your part, but it could be well worth it in the end. If your site is rich in content and appealing to the eye, you have a good chance of winning some sort of web award. Simply do your Google search on "website award" or "site of the day" and research the links for application procedures. If you win, the payoff will be the privilege of posting an award banner on your home page for all to see. The site hosting the award will literally be sending visitors to you by way of a link.

5. Put a Link in Your Signature Line

The easiest and quickest way to get publicity for your site is to put a link in your signature line. Every e-mail you send will announce your site, and including an enticing one-line ad such as "enter our contest to win a $10.00 gift certificate" will likely increase your traffic.

6. Join an E-mail Group

In case you aren't familiar with e-mail groups, they are basically networks of people with a common interest or purpose, using e-mail to communicate to each other. Using a single e-mail address, you can send a message to a whole group of people with interests similar to yours. Rest assured, no matter what your target market is, there is an e-mail group for it. It is important to keep in mind that most frown upon advertising and all ban spamming, however you are usually allowed to put a link in your signature line and make special announcements. Just be sure you actually contribute to the discussion - don't just assume you can use the list for free advertising or you will be shunned very quickly. Two of the most popular websites for e-mail groups are Yahoo Groups (http://groups.yahoo.com) and Topica (http://www.topica.com), both of which offer free memberships.

7. Publish a Newsletter

It can be sent daily, weekly, bi-weekly or monthly, but be sure you send it out on a regular basis. Mine is published weekly on Fridays without fail. My readers have learned to look for it and I'd never consider letting them down by missing a deadline. Aside from being consistent, it is a cardinal rule to offer something of value to your readership. Don't use it solely as a venue for advertising - there are plenty of places to put text links and banner ads within it. To maintain readers, you will need to include some helpful information as well. If you aren't much of a writer, there are articles available on the web that are free for publication, providing you include a link to the writer's website and a promotional paragraph. If you have a hard time finding these, consider posting a call for submissions on writers' websites offering $5.00 and free promotion via a byline. You will be pleasantly surprised how many people respond with fresh and well-written ideas.

8. Purchase Advertising

Think advertising is expensive? Think again. There are countless inexpensive opportunities for advertising on the Internet. Start by looking for sites which target the same market you do, providing they don't directly compete with yours. Chances are they have a link for people interested in advertising on their site. If you can't find it, simply e-mail the webmaster or site owner and inquire. Another option is to do a search on eBay. Many sites put banner ad placement on auction. You can find ad spots on eBay for as little as $5.99, but remember, it is an auction, and someone could easily beat you out. I recently saw a banner ad auction get up to $269.00. Don't forget however, because it's an auction, you have the power to limit the amount you will pay a your maximum bid. It is important to have a banner ready to go, since you will usually need to obtain permission from the website's owner before bidding on the auction. Always read the terms of the auction carefully, to make sure you understand the dates your banner will be up and exactly where it will be placed.

9. Promoting Your Business Using an Online Network

Just starting to catch on is a unique way to network with other small businesses by way of shared advertising. The basic idea is to swap business cards, flyers, or coupons (called "fillers") for your site with other small business owners. They will put your fillers in their customer orders and you will put their fillers in your orders. Many groups put together bags or packs with a compilation of member fillers along with other goodies the recipient will enjoy. These can be given out at area businesses, schools, day care centers, parties... the list is endless. If you have trouble finding a networking group think about starting one of your own.

10. Write an Article

With a little work and a free morning, you should be able to put together a couple of paragraphs for a "how-to" piece on your area of expertise. Just be certain it somehow relates to your website. Use your article in your own newsletter or search on writers' websites for sites or e-zines looking for articles that may be a good fit for your piece. Whether or not they pay for publication they will be an excellent way to get the word out about your site. Just be sure to keep your byline brief and don't reference your website within your article unless absolutely necessary.

DEAR FELLOW SPAM HATERS,

Don't think so.

I don't mean to say that I don't hate other things, too,

But spam... hooboy!

SQUISH 'EM LIKE BUGS!

I believe we should have a constitutional amendment allowing
cruel and unusual punishment in the case of spammers. Maybe
that tummy thing like the Japanese do when they get

As with drugs, mere possession of bulk emailing software
should result in the immediate confiscation of the computer

Just thinking about sending spam should be illegal, like
joking about bombs in an airport. If I get to be Grand

It's for their own good.

IN CLOSING...

Having looked at the Websites of some of the anti-spam

disgust and utter skin-crawling contempt for spam.

Like them, I have turned a blind-eye to more mundane
problems like hunger, illiteracy, disease, country music and
poverty so as to focus on the true menace plaguing our

The History Of The Watch: From The Early 19th Century To Present Day Timepieces!

Chris Vorelli

The watch has made many transformations through the years. There have been many modifications and technological advancements that have made it possible to wear them on your wrist and tell the time with a push of a button! Unlike the watches made many centuries ago, the watches of today offer cutting edge technology and modern day convenience features. The watch is steeped in history and has seen us through World Wars and Nuclear Warfare. At the end of time, there's no doubt that we'll use a watch to make note of the date/time!

To truly understand the evolution of the watch, we must take a journey into the past. The first timekeeping device was actually a pocket watch. Though, back in the day, they were worn around the neck. I guess we know the occupation of Flava Flav's early ancestors!

After the railroad began using the pocket watch, the watch industry grew by leaps and bounds! With the invention of the wristwatch, watches became increasingly popular among professionals and everyday folk. The LED digital watch and the Pilot's watch have taken the watch designs and functions to a whole new level. To date, there are many watchmakers vying for your business! Your best bet is to hop online and view the many different styles, models and prices before you purchase another watch.

The pocket watch is the oldest form of watch in production. In the beginning, they were completely customized pieces of jewelry that were mainly owned by royalty or the rich. Encrusted with jewels and made of the finest quality materials, the early pocket watches were not easily affordable. Eventually made into smaller versions and worn around the neck, the pocket watch was still mostly considered a fashion accessory. That was until the development of the railroad. Using the pocket watch as a means to schedule train departures and arrivals, the pocket watch became a time telling necessity. Unfortunately, though, the early pocket watch models did not accurately tell time; they "lost" time as the day progressed, making it impossible to synchronize times among a group of people. Following a train collision, it was deemed that the pocket watch needed to undergo a technological improvement to tell time more accurately.

The revised technology made it possible to begin making the pocket watch smaller and smaller, until it eventually began to be worn on the wrist. The wristwatch began to see a dramatic burst of production during wartimes. The military saw a use for a watch that could be easily read while performing duties. The chronograph wristwatches with luminous hands were in high demand! Today, there are a multitude of watch manufacturers that specialize in wristwatch production. There are watches sporting beautiful jewels and watches that are mostly geared toward function. Some are battery operated, while others operate from the power of the sun! There are watches that will fit into any price range, too. Shopping online will allow you to view and compare many wristwatches so that you can pick the one that is most perfect for your wants and needs!

The LED Digital wrist watch came about in the late 1960's and early 1970's. These watches were very unique in that they require no moving parts to tell the time of day! Passing an electrical charge through inorganic materials creates the LED digital technology. In other words, you simply press a button and the watch lights up with the dime/date! The Americans and the Japanese have been the forerunners in the development of the LED digital watch. Early models were expensive, but are inexpensive to date. They are the best watches to learn how to tell time by!

The Aviation Watch (Pilot Watch) is a very functional timepiece.. These watches actually help to maintain flight plans, perform pre-flight planning and navigate flights, so they are extremely important for pilots! Used primarily by the military and aircrew, the Aviation style watches are also popular among avid outdoorsmen and athletes. Today, the aviation world has seen a great improvement in a plane's instrumentation panel, so the Aviation watch isn't quite as important, but they are very useful to have just in case you need a back up!

All watches are analog or digital in nature, some are even both! Men, women and children will be able to find a wrist watch that is just perfect for their needs/desires. Shopping on the Internet, you'll find many merchants that sell watches. There are places to find some really great discounted selections, too! When it comes to watches, there are many factors you should consider before you purchase, including: functions needed, size, style and price. Once you have your choices narrowed down, shopping online is the quickest and most convenient way to go. Whether you are an avid watch collector or you are purchasing a time teaching model, remember that your choices have been made possible thanks to the many talented designers and engineers through the years!

Antler Shed 101
Elly Kendall

Antler Shed 101
by: Elly Kendall

This article on antler shed is provided so individuals know that antler products can be made without animals being injured in any way. I also hope to promote ethical antler shed collection. So here are the basics:
Antler Shed 101
by: Elly Kendall

Antlers do not just keep growing. They drop off and the animals grow new ones. These sloughed-off antlers are called shed. Shed hunting or collecting has been a great source for week end entertainment, especially during the off hunting season from late winter to early spring. Shed antlers are prized for making everything from jewelry to chandeliers. The big bonus is that the animals drop them every year and do not have to be killed for their antlers. However, collecting shed must be done with the animals best interest at heart. Never approach wild animals of any kind. There is no need to push them off their feeding and watering areas or disturb their routines just to get an antler. Winter is a very hard time for these animals besides they will drop more next year.

Bucks and bulls, the males of the deer, elk and moose species, shed their antlers every year usually between January and April. The father north in the United states the earlier they drop. Here in Arizona it seems like late February to late March is especially a good time. If you go as far south as Old Mexico the bucks don't shed until March. Younger animals seem to drop theirs last. The antlers drop off to make room for the new ones which grow through the summer.

New antlers are covered in a fuzzy skin called velvet. Velvet is the only know regenerating skin found in mammals. This skin is sensitive and susceptible to damage which causes antler abnormalities. It's full of blood vessels to nourish the new antlers, which are true bone, until it is no longer needed. The velvet then dries up and falls off sometimes assisted by the animal rubbing on trees and brush.

The new formation of antler bone grows at an amazing rate. Elk and moose antlers can grow at rate of one inch a day, which explains their awesome racks that appear to just keep growing.

If you decide to go shed hunting here's a few simple tips:
1.)Practice ethical shed collecting. Don't disturb the animals they need their feeding grounds to make it through the winter. Trespassing has become an issue with shed collecting. Respect for the animals and respect for landowners.

2.) Look for young trees with "rubs" on them. These are places where the bark has been rubbed off.

3.) Fence lines are a good place to look since jumping can jar the antlers off. I have seen running elk with one antler off and the other just dangling.

4.) Usually both antlers can be found within a 300 yards depending on their feeding and watering patterns so when you find one keep looking as you circle out.

5.) Scout before hand so you have an idea where the deer, elk or moose are. Establishing their watering and bedding locations and their daily feeding patterns- just like hunting. The route they travel will be an excellent trail to follow- at a distance.

Happy & Ethical Hunting!

Shop Online And Save Money

Eric Madsen

With our days having fewer hours than we need, online shopping has become a way of life and a time saver. Now you can stay at home, sit in front of the fire, poolside or near your favorite window, enjoying a good cup of coffee or your favorite beverage, and shop till you drop. You can take as much time and compare prices and quality without having tired legs and sore feet.

As gas prices escalate you can use your gas savings money for selecting an extra item or two that capture your fancy. Online shopping will save you time in your busy day. You don't have to rush to the store for that gift you forgot about, hassle with the kids that want to be in the toy department and certainly not with you in the clothes, jewelry and other departments.

We know a woman whose husband thinks it is Christmas all year round! She shops online and gets packages delivered to her door about four times a week. He comes home from work and has a ball opening the packages. For him, it's like Christmas 52 weeks a year!

Not only can you shop online, but you can fine printable grocery coupons that are not available anywhere else but online. Another positive to online shopping is online coupons which the companies display on many shopping sites. These coupons are discounts given to you for shopping at their online stores.

These are just some of the benefits of online shopping. You can read information and tips about online shopping published by the US Federal Trade Commission at http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/online/cybrsmrt.htm and the Better Business Bureau at http://www.bbbonline.org/OnlineShopTips/ . Enjoy online Shopping!

The Difference Between Investing and Trading

Rob Hall

Investing and Trading are not the same thing. The returns you seek, the length of time it takes to achieve those returns, the amount of risk
one is prepared to take, and the commitment one can make to monitor
the investments dictate the strategy of whether to invest or trade.

Investing

Investing is holding an asset for a longer term, expecting it to increase in value. The most common example is investing in equity mutual funds through a retirement plan. Many of these funds are held for years and are expected to show a substantial
appreciation over the long term.

You can also invest in individual stocks and hold them for 6 to 18 months or longer, sometimes much longer. This is referred to as the "buy and hold" strategy.

Real estate would be another example of investing, unless the property is purchased for quick flipping.

Jewelry, art, stamps, and collectibles are still other examples of investing where they are kept for a long time in the hope their value appreciates.

Trading

Trading is also investing but the time frame for a return on that investment is a much shorter period, usually a matter of a few days or weeks.

The most obvious example would be day trading where a trader is in and out of a market the same day.

Still other trading takes place over a period from a few days to a few weeks.

Most trading takes place with individual stocks and commodities, with commodity markets being the most predominant vehicle.

Everything Old Becomes New Again
C.L.Hanna

Think that something you have had since you were a teen-ager can't be worth much?

Think again! Even if you are only now in your twenties...it won't be long until that dress, purse, tie, jewelry, perfume bottle or sport memorabilia will be sought after. It never ceases to amaze me just what can become the hottest collectible at any given moment...and it never ceases to bring me joy to find that I have it! Right now, I am enjoying watching my daughter get excited over a 'find' that I used to wear or use (and which I had hoped that I would never see again)! The styles and designs that are being lauded as the 'latest thing' all look very similar to the things that my parents abhored and would not allow me to wear - no matter how much I pleaded. They aren't new to anyone over 40 years of age. My mother had sweaters that I begged off of her in the 1970s - because they were from the 1950s and were cool once again. While others were sporting copies - I was wearing 'the real thing'.

What do you have that is now on the 'Hot List" of "Cool Stuff"?

Well...it just might surprise you. So many times, as I walk through a flea market or antique shop, I over-hear other shoppers saying, "Oh, I used to have one of those"... followed by the sound of disbelief when they look at the price tag ... followed by the words, "I should have kept it!" While it may be difficult to imagine that the toy or book or dish we use today could be worth ten times more than it's original purchase price in the future, it does happen - and here are just a few tips on recognizing a potential treasure:

The Maker, Author, Celebrity, etc. - Knowing a bit about who made the item - and when - is always important. Knowing what a person has accomplished and how they stand out in their field is also key. You will probablly want to take care of anything directly linked to someone who is a celebrity due to setting a record - or making a box office smash - especially if they did it despite exceptional odds or if they were able to do it repeatedly...not necessarily while being the most popular or socially accepted among their peers or fans. Of course, we have seen this to be the case, as well, when someone who has had no time to really make much of a history for themselves - become an unforgettable part of history through their untimely death. While unforeseen events often trigger the sudden rise of an items' particular value...timing can be everything when it comes to the collectible market. You've got to"know when to hold 'em and know when to fold 'em".

Dates, Signatures and Marks - Know what your item should say (or not say) and what identifies it as the 'real McCoy' - McCoy pottery pieces have many different identifying marks which were used since the company first began...some are very similar in the way they look and some very different. What was made, when it was made and where, being some of the determining factors for which mark was used. Lack of that knowledge has caused more than one disappointment to be sure. Having a treasure right under your nose and letting it go for a quarter or fifty cents when it is worth five dollars or more can leave you with a sick feeling. Tossing away something your Grandfather gave you, because you find it unattractive - only to find that it is irreplaceable is...(well, maybe we shouldn't open up a wound that deep). Keeping something in the best condition possible, is only part of what it takes for an item to be considered valuable. In fact, some things are not required to be in pristene condition...but instead, are expected to have certain wear asssociated with them...however, all items with moving parts, for instance, should have all of their parts and the parts should be working for most to be considered of any worth. We all know to look for signatures, of course, but being sure that a signature is not forged is not always easy - in fact, it is one of the most common mistakes made by enthusiastic collectors. If you are putting out any amount of real cash - get an expert's opinion before committing.
With All Of This In Mind..What Do You Have?

If you are like most of us, you have things from your past...and somewhere in the future, some of those things are bound to become worth some money. When and just how much...is anybody's guess. Some items are a little more predictable than others, though. The more rare, because of how it was made, or how long the artist created, or the effect of the author's writings on society, or even because of who owned it, are all to be considered. What you don't know can hurt you, financially speaking, and yet the average person can easily be the owner of any number of items that will be valuable tomorrow. If you want to test something out - ask your pre-teen what they think...if they say it's cool hold onto it for a few more years - it's almost certain to be in demand as retro, if nothing else! If you are holding onto something that you believe to be valuable now - don't let someone sell you short...if you don't know enough about the item find someone you can trust to educate you on the item...or educate yourself at your local library - or online. The Internet is a wealth of information at your fingertips.

Everything old truly becomes 'new' again in a new generation's eyes and while chances are you will not get rich off of your past - handing it over to someone for a fair price based on it's true worth - can be a very rewarding way of preserving it!

Glow In the Dark Jewelry Trends

Jill Nelson

Glow in the dark pieces of jewelry have become increasingly popular accessories for individuals of all ages. There are so many forms of glow in the dark jewelry that you could virtually light yourself up using only these accessories. This form of jewelry is fairly inexpensive (especially compared to most types of jewelry) and is meant to be used as fun and creative accessories that let your personality shine through. Some of the most popular glow in the dark items include glow bracelets, glow necklaces, glow pins and glow rings and each form of jewelry has its own unique characteristics.

Glow Bracelets

Glow bracelets are a fun and creative way to sport the latest form of glow in the dark jewelry and are great for parties that take place at night or in a bar. They come in a variety of colors including purple, pink and yellow and one glow bracelet can have up to 3 colors in one. Glow bracelets are fairly cheap and can be purchased for as little as 25 cents a bracelet when purchased in bulk or wholesale forms These bracelets usually only come in one size which fits almost any size of wrist.

Glow Necklaces

Glow necklaces are an extended form of glow bracelets. They are made with the exact same materials and come in the same colors; they are just bigger so they fit around your neck instead of your wrist. That said, they also cost more because they use more materials. A glow necklace may cost about 50 cents when purchased in bulk or wholesale form.

Glow Pins

Glow pins are the newest form of glow in the dark jewelry on the market and offer a wide selection of designs and styles to choose from. Glow pins are available in the form of pins, smiley faces, sports teams and even flags. These pins are not made from the same material as glow bracelets and necklaces, they light up using battery-powered LED lights. These are also considerably more expensive than glow necklaces and glow bracelets, however they last way longer and are less likely to get broken or damaged.

Glow Rings

Glow rings are not quite as popular as the other forms of jewelry listed above, perhaps because not as many people are aware that they exist. Glow rings come in many sizes and are great for parties and other fun events. Not only are there glow rings, but there are also glow earrings which can be purchased in many different shapes and designs. Glow rings can cost as little as $5 and glow earrings as little as $7, but they also have the potential to be quite expensive as well.

Glow jewelry is only expected to become more popular in the years to come and there are sure to be many new styles and innovations in this form of jewelry.

Jill Nelson is a freelance writer who enjoys spending time with her children when she isn't working as a contributing editor for sites writing articles on topics such as Glow Sticks for sites like http://www.glowsticksdirect.com.

Buying Platinum Jewelry Without Getting Ripped-Off
Sam Serio

Buying Platinum jewelry can be fun, exciting and confusing. Whether you're considering a gift of Platinum jewelry for someone special or as a treat for yourself, take some time to learn the terms used in the industry. Here's some information to help you get the best quality Platinum jewelry for your money, whether you're shopping in a traditional brick and mortar store or online.

Platinum is a precious metal that costs more than gold. It usually is mixed with other similar metals, known as the platinum group metals: iridium, palladium, ruthenium, rhodium and osmium.

Different markings are used on platinum jewelry as compared with gold jewelry, based on the amount of pure platinum in the piece. The quality markings for platinum are based on parts per thousand. For example, the marking 900 Platinum means that 900 out of 1000 are pure platinum, or in other words, the item is 90% platinum and 10% other metals. The abbreviations for platinum - Plat. or Pt. - also can be used in marking jewelry.

Items that contain at least 950 parts per thousand pure platinum can be marked simply platinum. Items that have at least 850 parts per thousand pure platinum can be marked with the amount of pure platinum and the word platinum or an abbreviation (for example, 950 platinum, 900 Plat. or 850 Pt.). Jewelry that contains less than 850 parts per thousand pure platinum, but has a total of 950 parts per thousand of platinum group metals (of which at least 500 parts is pure platinum), may be marked with both the amount of pure platinum and the amount of the other platinum group metals in the piece. For example, the marking 600 Plat. 350 Irid. means that the item has 600 parts per thousand (60%0 platinum, and 350 parts per thousand (35%) iridium, totaling 950 parts per thousand of platinum group metals, and 50 parts per thousand (5%) other metals.

Thanks to the Internet it might seem that finding low cost suppliers of profitable and fast moving Mexican products is an easy task, but it really isn't. The vast majority of the "suppliers" you find on the web are American companies or individuals that are basically reselling Mexican products at high margins. The truth is that with them as your sources you won't even get close to having the best possible wholesale prices.

To make fat JUICY profits in the reselling business you definitely MUST get in touch with the real - hard - to - find - low - cost - sources. There is simply no other way to make it BIG in this business. You NEED the Low cost SOURCES. Period. The cheaper you buy, the more competitive and profitable you get.

The problem is that discovering REAL low cost sources can be a difficult, time consuming and expensive mission. Some information providers on the web are charging $30 per manufacturer profile, while others can charge you more than $1000 per business directory, or even a subscription fee to access their trade leads database. But who do you think is listed on their databases? The Mexican manufacturers? or just another reseller eager to sell at a nice profit? Exactly!. Those trade leads databases are mainly filled with lists and lists of intermediaries and marketers that want to make money reselling the product for a heavy profit.

At Mexico-Store.com You can access these 3 valuable and updated sources of low cost suppliers:

1- The Mexican Rustic Handcrafts Manufacturers Directory

2- The Mexican Taxco Silver Jewelry Manufacturers Directory, and

Avoid those expensive resellers and get in touch with the real Mexican manufacturers today ! .- We provide you with all the necessary contact information including email in most cases.

Some of these silver jewelry, handcrafts and leather products manufacturers do have a website. But that doesn't mean you can easily find them on the search engines. As we all know, its very hard to make it to the top of the search engine rankings and it can take more than 6 months to even get a website listed with them. That and the fact that most Mexican artisans are not as computer savvy as "we all think" are the main reason why you won't find that many websites at all of Mexican manufacturers listed on Google or Yahoo. In many cases their websites are not even optimized for the search engines to list them.

Don't expect to get the best possible prices from those Mexican products "providers" that you can find on the web for free .-

Most of the guys and companies that are ranking at the top of the search engine results are basically American companies that are reselling Mexican products. So don't expect to get the best possible prices from them. Don't kid your self. Marketers and other middlemen exist to make a profit. Everybody knows that. It's impossible for an intermediary to sell you at a manufacturer's low price. It's against their business model.

The only way you are going to make BIG cash is by dealing direct with Mexican sources.

Get our updated Mexico trade directories and start getting incredible low prices per silver gram or per handcrafted product that you can easily resell twice as much or translate into GREATER profit margins for your self.
